Why do I have to send an e-mail to register?

Under construction.

  • If you're registering for the forum and you have a Gmail address with a period (i.e., "dot") in the username, or you're connected through an IP address that has shown some significant spammer activity, you have to send me an e-mail message to me, the forum administrator ("register" in the subject line just helps me spot them more easily in my inbox).

Obviously, we want to keep spammers out. These forums aren't for selling untaxed cigarettes, porn, medications, etc. After we got hit by spammers a few times some years ago, we had to tighten things up.

In Gmail, the period in the username portion of the e-mail address is superfluous. Gmail ignores that character, so the messages get delivered whether the period is there or not, or even in different places in the username. Spammers sometimes exploit this so they can hide their e-mail addresses from search engines simply by adding or moving periods in the username.

For example, spam.bot at gmail dot com, s.p.a.m.b.o.t at gmail dot com, and spambot at gmail dot com are all the same address to Gmail, but they look different to most search engines. When you send me an e-mail message, I create an exception in the forum software settings for your specific e-mail address so that you can register. I wish there were a more streamlined way to do this, but this is what we have to work with.

And if your IP address has been used significantly as a source for spam activity, I also have to tailor a specific exception for you so you can register and participate in the forum.

I apologize for any inconveniences or delays that result from these precautions. I hope you find these forums useful!
